Why to support LAA? |

| First reason:
Laos is poor. |
The Lao PDR is one of the poorest countries of the world with an average per capita income of less than 900 USD per year.
Around one third of the population still lives below the national poverty line of
1,50 USD a day, You can imagine that most of persons with ASD belong to this group. The public health sector is not very developed and focusses mainly on basic healthcare problems. The "exotic" cases of autism are not yet on the agenda. |

| Second reason:
Therapy is expensive. |
So far there are no Lao nationals trained to work with persons suffering from ASD.Some families with autistic children are hiring experts from abroad which comes at a cost of at least 500 USD per month. | ||
| Third reason:
Training also has its costs. |
As there are no experts in Lao PDR there is also no training available. Training facilities in neighboring Thailand are offering special conditions for students from Laos as their part of the support but still a big portion of the financial burden, especially living expenses during the training, remains with either the interested students or the parents of the autistic kids. | ||
| Fourth reason:
Quality treatment has its price. |
The aim of LAA is to provide quality therapy for persons suffering from ASD. For this reason the Vientiane Autism Center has been built. It can currently receive up to 10 children with ASD at a price of about 280 USD per child. This is enough to just cover the recurring cost. | ||
| We, parents of autistic children in Laos, started this initiative. We are using our own resources in order to extend the services for autistic kids far beyond our own families. We will continue to do so. | But our resources are limited and the demand
is much bigger than our forces. Therefore we need support. This could be done in many ways, like currently for the equipment of VAC or for training of Lao staff in Thailand. Recently
LAA established its Scholarship Fund intending to support families with childrenwith autism who are not able to afford the full amount of the VAC fees.
